Tattoo Convention Survival Guide: What to Bring, Expect, and Look For

Tattoo conventions bring together the best of the best: artists, collectors, and fans all sharing one massive space dedicated to the art of tattooing. It’s the ultimate deep dive into tattoo culture.

Our team at Inked has been attending and tattooing at conventions across the country for years, and this November 14-16, our Miami artists will be at the Allstars Tattoo Convention, tattooing live, meeting clients, and soaking up the energy all weekend long.

Planning on joining us? This guide covers everything you need to know, from what to bring and what to expect to how to make the most of every minute.

And when the weekend’s over, keep that inspiration going. Visit our Miami studio to connect with the same artists and start planning your next piece.

Before You Go

A little prep makes all the difference. Conventions are exciting, but they’re also packed, noisy, and easy to get lost in if you don’t have a game plan.

Check the lineup

Every convention has its own mix of artists, shops, and vendors. Check the event page or social media ahead of time to see who’s coming. If you spot an artist you’ve been dying to get tattooed by, reach out early. The best artists fill their slots fast, sometimes weeks in advance.

Have a loose plan

You don’t need a strict schedule, but know your priorities. Are you there to get tattooed, pick up some art, or just people-watch and see what’s trending? Having a rough idea helps you pace yourself and keeps you from wandering aimlessly through 300 booths until your feet give out.

Bring cash

Sure, most artists and vendors take cards now, but internet connection at a big tattoo convention can be spotty. Cash is your safety net for tips, merch, or that spontaneous flash tattoo you didn’t plan on but absolutely need.

What to Bring

Keep it light, but don’t forget the essentials. Pack what you’ll actually need to stay comfortable and enjoy the day:

  • Water: You’ll be walking and standing for hours. Stay hydrated, especially if you’re getting tattooed.
  • Snacks: Convention food is fine, but it’s expensive and not always quick. A granola bar or some trail mix will save you from crashing halfway through the day.
  • Portable charger: Between snapping pics, checking artist profiles, and posting stories, your battery won’t last long.
  • Comfortable shoes: Unless you’re under the needle, there’s no sitting through a tattoo convention.
  • Aftercare balm: If you’re getting tattooed, bring your preferred ointment (or some money to purchase one) so you’re set when it’s done.
  • Hand sanitizer: Crowds and countless touchpoints. A quick clean now and then keeps you and any new tattoos safe.

A small backpack or crossbody bag keeps your hands free while you browse, grab merch, or sit down for your session.

What It’s Like Inside

The moment you walk in, you’ll hear that familiar buzz from every direction. Artists are tattooing live on the floor, people are crowding in to watch, and every wall is covered in flash sheets and art prints. It’s overstimulating in the best possible way.

Live tattooing, everywhere

Watching artists work in real time is part of what makes conventions so addictive. You’ll see everything from delicate linework to massive full-color pieces happening right in front of you. If you’re getting tattooed, expect some onlookers. People love to stop and admire good work.

Vendors worth exploring

Conventions aren’t just about tattoos. You’ll find booths selling art prints, jewelry, apparel, and aftercare products you didn’t even know you needed. It’s a great chance to support smaller brands and indie artists who might not get as much love outside the convention circuit.

Competitions and showcases

Most conventions host daily tattoo contests, like “Best Black and Grey,” “Best of the Day,” and other categories that show off some of the nation’s top tattooing talent. Even if you’re not a part of the competition, stick around and watch. It’ll give you a new appreciation for just how technical and diverse tattooing really is.

Meet the Inked Miami Artists at Allstars

This year, Inked Miami is bringing some serious talent to the Allstars Tattoo Convention. Stop by our booth to watch them work, check out their portfolios, or grab a session if you can.

Whether you’re collecting or just exploring, these six artists will be creating all weekend long.

Getting Tattooed at a Convention

If you’ve booked a session or are hoping to snag a walk-up, keep these tips in mind:

Show up ready

Eat something beforehand, drink plenty of water, and skip the hangover. Bring any reference images your artist asked for and wear clothes that make access easy. You don’t want to be wrestling out of a hoodie in the middle of the convention floor.

Respect the workspace

It might look like organized chaos, but each booth is an artist’s studio for the weekend. Don’t touch equipment or interrupt while they’re working. If you want a photo or video, it’s polite to ask first.

Walk-ups are hit or miss

Some artists save time for spontaneous tattoos, but those spots disappear fast. If you’re hoping to score a walk-up, get there early and stay flexible — both on design and placement.

Stay Safe

Most conventions have strict hygiene standards, but always keep your eyes open. Your artist should use single-use needles, sealed ink cups, and clean gloves. If something feels off, trust your gut and move on.

Finding Your Next Artist

Even if you’re not getting tattooed this time, conventions are the best place to find your next tattoo artist.

Take your time walking around and checking out portfolios in person. You’ll see how artists work, how they interact with clients, and what their vibe is like. That tells you way more than scrolling through their Instagram ever could.

If someone’s work catches your eye, start a conversation. Ask about their process, their favorite styles, or where they’re based. You’ll get a feel for their personality, which can matter just as much as their art when you’re trusting someone with your skin.

After the Convention

Once the weekend wraps up, stay connected. Follow the artists and brands you met, tag them if you post photos, and support their work beyond the convention floor. That’s how you build authentic connections in the tattoo community.

If you got tattooed, follow your aftercare instructions carefully, even if all you want to do is show it off. Give your skin time to heal before you start flashing it around.
